3.1 GIANT table. The GIANT table is a catalog rather than an algorithm for name grouping. As names were submitted to the GIANT system and people noticed variations in names for the same individuals, name experts were brought in and trained to produce these tables. Catalogs exist for many different countries, one for surnames, and another for given names. The processes in place for producing these catalogs were not all automated and maintaining them was very expensive. The GIANT catalog represents a tremendous amount of work. It consists of a variant spelling (OLD) and a standard spelling (NEW). We make the groupings of the catalogs available so that they may 1) act as the initial default groupings and 2) contribute to the final grouping decision.
