7.5 Family name alias-compounds. The last case we consider covers people in the French culture of Quebec who carry as a surname which has two very different forms. The consequences of viewing this phenomenon as an individual carrying two surnames are complicating for individual record linkage. Native record keepers might naturally analyze this surname into two pieces and choose to record only the first. Keeping value specific weights for the combinations that occur would seem the only solution. These alias names are very much like the distinctive modifiers used in stereotyped given names. The value of one piece depends greatly on the values of the other. There would seem no way to estimate the value specific weight for the combination from just those of its components.
