7.6 Conclusion. This section discussed possible solutions to some of the problems that arise in calculating weights for name field comparison when name compounding is involved. In two of the five cases considered, i.e., with compounded surnames, we were able to propose specific adjustments that we could make to some of the factors in the weight formulas that would seem to solve the perceived problems. Algorithmic solutions to the stereotyped given name and alias compounding problems are not forthcoming. In these cases there seems little alternative but to parse the compound names either as undivided wholes or as we might analyze them into parts. Record linkage has to be flexible enough to handle both alternatives, as may seem most appropriate for the situation. “Jean-Pierre” must agree (partially) with “Pierre” (but maybe not with “Jean”) and “Dupont dit la Longue” with “Dupont” (but maybe not with “la Longue”).
