Appendix C: BRITISH FAMILY AND KINSHIP TERMS

The central concern of genealogy is the family. Its constitution depends on cultural parameters and what we are concerned about primarily is called the nuclear family, which consists minimally of the man and his wife. When multiple wives or a harem is involved or people in a polyandrous relationship, a nuclear family would be formed with each couple. The commonality of such unions is the potential to bear offspring or the intent to rear children. When we refer to the people in the family structure, we use the language of kinship terminology as developed by our culture. The concern of this appendix is to address the use of kinship terms in the British culture insofar as they designate relationships in the family, whether nuclear or extended.
