1) a phonologically variant spelling of a name involving the hearing by the clerk recording it or the pronunciation of the person uttering it; a d. v. contrasts with a misspelling, a mistake made by the person reading the name (misreading), or an intentional alteration (respelling or abbreviation); cf.
