farm name the name which a person may take as a surname by virtue of residence on a particular farm; the f. n. was a variety of toponym; the f. n. was in practice often equivalent to what we now call the family name; among the Scandinavians the f. n. used to compete with the clerical name, and the soldier name, for use as a substitute for the patronymic; cf.
