Introduction.

Missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were admonished to keep a journal of their activities on a daily basis. When Ephraim arrived in Sweden in 1908 he purchased a small (15x20cm) bound notebook for this purpose and then later for the new year he probably purchased a diary in which to make his daily entries. (The notebook was rediscovered in 2013 among Phyllis’ estate papers.) Towards the middle Ephraim wrote out a short excerpt from Abraham Lincoln and used earlier empty pages to do math (possibly exchange rates, etc., even chemical formulae). After using mucilage to glue in a couple of newspaper articles from his mission he used the notebook as a scrapbook for clippings: quite a few after 1916 from the Park Record and the Deseret News. Some, which Zina must have added, are just loose between the pages, one as late as 1946. In the 1930s Zina also added writings in pencil about some health issues of her children. There is a monthly Elders’ report covering June 1908 to September 1909 on the second page. The journal entries don’t begin until the mid-point of the book. These entries are available a click away, for those interested in Ephraim’s movements and activities during the first eight months of his mission.

Ella had a diary for 1910 in her possession, probably because she knew some Swedish and could read it. In December 2004 her oldest son (Hal) and daughter (Susan) scanned 53 non-blank pages into images in the JPG digital format. In August 2005 Susan presented each of Ephraim & Zina’s children (or heirs of the deceased children) with a compact disk containing these images. While Eph’s idiosyncratic misspellings and run-on sentences can be distracting, they reflect his extremely limited education. Perhaps as troublesome to the modern reader are: 1) the concern for recording activities in three divisions of the day (forenoon, afternoon, evening), 2) the constant recording of the time of day, even down to the minute when the time-tables of public transportation are involved, 3) lack of any explicit mention of emotions, feelings, impressions, or even doctrines and beliefs. Of course, the reader will want to read freely between the lines. I was particularly amused by the coincidence that he came down sick after having eaten the renowned Scandinavian lutefisk the night before. Perhaps the reader may also be inclined to take that mundane necessity of cutting wood as a sign that he was venting emotions. During his first October in 1908 there was a conference held in Norrköping, where he got a chance to purchase some postcards and have his picture taken. His card collection was among Phyllis’s effects, and his photo is probably that most common one published widely. He also glued a clipping of a local newspaper report about the conference in his notebook on the back of the Elders Report page. On the next page there is another clipping from 1910 telling of the impact of the Mormon proselyting activities of some 70 missionaries on the emigration of the Swedish people. Subsequent clippings tells us that Eph’s was deeply concerned with the social challenges of his day, e.g., in 1916 the speech by Karl Liebknecht (a Marxist activist) against Prussian imperialism for which he was imprisoned for treason for 30 months. We can even discern roots of Democratic-Socialist attitudes, when Eph converses with some men on the subject and then later attends a public lecture. When he almost daily tells of going to the post office, I can’t help seeing this as his opportunity both for attuning his own public awareness, as well as for publishing Church meeting times and their activities calendar. When he enters a new area, he obtains a map and leads us from farm to farm as he distributes tracts. It was surprising to me how he and his companion often worked separately and during the summer months how they would cover the countryside, often staying overnight with friends or in public lodgings as his budget might allow. Their visits to widows, members, friends, investigators, merchants and craftsmen are mentioned with little detail. When Elder Lindstrom goes out to Brita Maja’s, I can’t help seeing him cutting wood and helping around. Brita Maja Larsen and Augusta Johnson in Vadd, Kolbeck, was a frequent stopping off place. Only once does Eph mention counseling a member concerning her moral integrity, which attempt seems to have failed of result. Of great interest too was that in December 1908 he got to go visit with relatives in the town of his birth. No doubt he got to speak a bit of English when he got acquainted with a girl from Pennsylvania who was living there.

Vingåker Wilhemsberg.

July 1th [1908] We were going down to Kathernaholm tracting. But there was no trains running that way so walk a ways out in the country. Had an arguement with a women for half an hour came home after three hours wandering out in the country. July. 2. At home July. 3 Went out tracting in the after noon, stayed at Shalings for the night. July 4. Walked to Parstorp visited bro Anderson in the afternoon. August 1908.

Held a fast on the first off Aug. Held meeting at Bilsbro | on the second came home after meeting. At home on the third spent evening at Erickson’s. Went tracting out to Högsjö and stayed to Olunds at nignt on the 4th. Came home on the fifth Stayed at home on the sixth were out to Sister Peterson’s in the afternoon. At home until 3³⁰ then went to the depot to see Ellen Peterson off for Utah on the 7th. Stayed home all day on the 8th. Held meeting & Sunday school went to a temperance fest at the island on the 9th. At home in the forenoon & went out to the Poor house in the after noon of the 10th. Started for Parstorp had dinner at Mon arrived at Parstorp at 5 P.M. Stayed there all night on the 11th. Visited Albert Anderson & stayed at Parstorp on the 12th. We left Parstorp at 3 P.M. & stayed at Swanvik on the night of the 13th. Left Svanvik at 10 A.M. arrived at home at 12³⁰ & went out to Dalby in the afternoon home at night 14th. Were home all day on the 15th. Held fast meeting at Wilhelmsberg Baptized three boys in the afternoon of the 16th. At home & out to Dolby on the 17th. Were home & A. G. September 1908.

Sept 1th We left home at 12 A.M. Arived at Swanvik 3 P.M. at Parstorp at 6 P.M. and at Forstorp at 7 P.M. stayed there all night. 2nd Left Forstorp at 10 A.M. arrived at Botten at 2 P.M. had dinner at Kolbeck then left there for Magda Hagen got there at 6 P.M. & stayed all night. 3td Went over to Magdagård and visited a saint left Magda hagen at 11 A.M. tracted all the way to Bulton then walked on to Parstorp and stayed there all night. 4th Left Parstorp at 11 A.M. tracted visited Carl H. Peterson arrived at Mon at 6 P.M. stayed there all night. 5th Left Mon at 11 A.M. stayed at Parstorp 3 hour’s then went over to Forstorp and stayed there all night. 6th of Sept. Left Forstorp at 9 A.M. Held F. October 1908.

Oct 1th Left Marsjö at 9³⁰. A.M. tracted all the way to Ålunds. & no one home at Ålund, missed the train at Högsjö and had to walk home. 2th Were at home all day 3third left on the 10⁵⁶ A.M. train for Högsjö stayed at Ålund all night. 4th Held Fast Meeting at Rosin’s & the relief society held meeting in the after noon got home at 6³⁰ P.M. in a awful wind storm. 5th Were at home all day spent the evening at Erickson. 6th. Were at home all day 3³⁰ P.M. then walked to Parstorp stayed there all night. 7th Left Parstorp at 11³⁰ A.M. clled at Swanvik got home a 3 P.M. spent the evening at Erickson’s. 8th Left Vingåker at 2⁴⁶ P.M. arrived in Norrköping at 5.P.M. 9th Bummed around town all day went to a Ephriamite meeting in the evening. 10th Bummed around all day attended meeting in the evening. 11th Went to konferance at 10.A.M. had dinner at Bro Erick Anderson’s attended meetings at 3.P.M. & 7.P.M. 11th[sic.] Did not accomplish much in the fore noon had my photo taken in the afternoon, Had a big feed at 7.P.M. 13th Bummed around town all day. 14th Stayed at the office most of the day bought some Post card also. 15th We Left Norrköping at 1²⁰ P.M. got home at 4.P.M. 16th Wrote two letter and studied the rest of the day had visiters in the evening (a suprise.). 17th stayed at home all day & evening. 18th Held Fast meeting at 11. November 1908.

December 1908.

Dec 1th Went out tracting called at Visund and then came back home. 2nd Bro N. H. Halstrom gave us a call, had supper at Dalby. 3th We were at home all day held Meeting at night Bro Halstrom spoke. 4th We at home until 2⁴⁶ P.M. Then N.H. left for Norrköping. 5th Went out to Billsbro at 2 P.M. stayed there all night. 6th Held Fast Meeting at 11.A.M. and then a Meeting at 2.P.M. at Billsbro came home at 6,30 P.M. 7th Left Vingåker at 9,05 A.M. for Eskelstuna Stayed in Eskelstuna all night. 8th Left Eskelstuna at 12,10 P.M. arrived at Stockholm at 4³⁵ P.M. Called on Anna Gustenson & attended meeting. 9th Went to the depot & seen B.Y. Monson off at 10¹⁵ A.M. Then went out to Ekensberg. Went on board the Kelso in the after noon. Then back to Rangarnö for supper. 19th Took dinner on the Kelso with Uncle & Back Matts. 20th Went down and Called on Johnson i Nes, stayed there two hours then came back home to Rangarnö. 21th Stayed at home all day. 22nd Stayed at home all day had a talk with the girl from Penn. 23th Just stayed around all day. 24th Hung around all day wrote a letter in the evening. 25th We were going to church but got word that Kelso had broke loose from her anchoring place. Then Uncle had to go and look after her so I just bummed around all day. 26th Left Rangarnö at 11.A.M. for Little Frisco. Had dinner there & stayed there all night. 27th Left Little Frisco at 10.A.M. attended meeting in the bön hus then went back to Rangarnö, Then Uncle & I went over to Senby at 4. P.M. & back to Rangarnö at 9.P.M. 28th Left Rangarna at 8 A.M. got to Skebo at 12.A.M. and home in Vingåker at 9²⁹ P.M. 29th Stayed home all day. 30th Stayed home all day. 31th Went to Vadd at 11.A.M. called at Brita Maja.

January 1909.

Jan.1.1909 We were at Vadd. left there at 4 P.M. called at Brita Maja. Sister Johnson walked home with us. 2nd Were at home in the fore noon Bro Anderson went out to Swanvik I stayed home & Meet Bro Lindstrom who came on the 4³⁵ P.M. train. 3td I & Bro Linstrom walked out to Swanvik, We held Fast Meeting at 11.A.M. then a meeting at 3.P.M. came home after meeting. 4th Stayed home all day went out to Dalby and had supper. 5th Started for Norrköping at 9⁰⁵ A.M. Got there at 11⁴⁸ A.M. 6th Was at the Norrköping office all day They held a Sunday School Fest there at 3.P.M. 7th Left Norrköping at 1²⁰ P.M. got to Vingåker at 4³⁵ P.M. Hulderstrom from Eskelstuna were with us. 9th At home until evening then we all went out to Dalby and had supper got home at 11.P.M. 10th Held meeting and Sunday School, then spent the rest of the day at home. 11th Bro’s Hendrick’s & Hulderstrom left on the 9⁰⁵ P.M. train. We stayed home all day & wrote letters also studyed. 12th Stayed home all day. 13th We left home at 11.A.M. and tracted on the way to Forstorp stayed there all night. 14th Left Forstorp at 11 A.M. for Button when we got to Button there was no one home so we walked over to Björklund and visited there two hour’s then stayed at Button all night. 15th Left Button at 10 A.M. Went up to Kolbeck to see sister Larsen (she was sick) we stayed there two hour’s then started for Parstorp when we got to Parstorp there was no one home so we went to Swanvik and stayed there all night. 16th We left Swanvik at 10 A.M. tracted Bromma. visited at Erick Ericksons at Lottra three hour’s then went to Mon where we stayed all night. 17th Held Fast Meeting at Mon at 11.A.M. then had dinner and came home, When we got home we heard that Brita Maja Larsen was very sick, so we went out and saw Augusta Johnson about it then we came home and spent the evening. 18th We stayed at home all day. 19th Left home at 11.A.M. Called at Edlund’s and left the star [Millenial Star magazine] then went out to Brita Maja’s, she was some better also called at Christina Erickson, and then went on out to Vad & stayed there all night. 20th Left Vad at 1.P.M. Called at The tailor’s Erickson’s and talked for 1½ hour. Then came home spent the evening [sic.] at home. 21th We at home went over and talked to Blom. We then went to a picture show, then came home & went to bed. 2. Sunday Went to S[unday] S[chool] at 11 A.M., Fast Meeting at 3 P.M. and a public meeting at 6 P.M. Spent the rest of the evening [always spelled “eveing”] at the office. 3. Monday Was at the office all forenoon. I and Durrell went down to get tickets for the theater, but it was locked. We then bought some cream puffs & went up to Pruß and ate [always spelled “eat”] them, went home. Monday We arose and went down to the depot before breakfast to see Nephi Petterson off. His two cousins were also there to see him off. Then came home and stayed the rest of the day & evening. 11. Tuesday After breakfast I read a short time & then I went down to the post office. I got a letter for Lindstrom, came home & then took our laundry out. Stayed home the rest of the day & evening. 12. Wednesday Was at home all day. I cut some wood. Bro. Lindstrom went out to Bergstuga. He came home at 7 P.M. 13. Thursday After breakfast I went down to the post office. Got a letter from Lydia [a sister in Utah]. Bro. Lindström went out to tailor Erickson. Was home all day & evening. 14. Friday After breakfast I went down to the post Office, bought some fish on the way home. In the afternoon I fried some fish. We went out to Dalby in the evening. Sister Petterson & Karin were there. We got home at 12³⁰ P.M. 15. Saturday Was at home all day. Bro Lindstrom went to the post office. In the evening Brants Karin called on us and read us some letter that she had wrote. 16. Sunday Bro Edlund called at 8³⁰ A.M. & we all three went out to Mon. Held fast Meeting at eleven. After meeting had dinner and then we came home. Spent the evening at home. 17. Monday After breakfast Bro. Lindstrom went out to the shoemaker’s and I went down to the post office. Got a Era [Church Magazine] for Lindstrom. I then came home & stayed the rest of the day & evening. 18. Tuesday Was at home most of the day. Made one trip down to the Depot and got the Star’s [Millenial Star; Church Magazine for the European Mission]. Sister Peterson called on us a few minutes [always spelled “minet(s)]. She had been to the handelsbod [grocery store]. Stayed home in the evening. 19. Wednesday After breakfast I had a bath. Bro. Lindstrom went to the post office. We then fried some fish & ate a few. Went out to Stenkullen in the evening. Got home at 10³⁰ P.M. 20. Thursday The first thing I done was cut Ivar Johnson’s hair. Then we had breakfast after which we went out to Brita Maja’s and then I went on out to Geringe. Bro. Lindstrom went up to old man Gerling. We came home at 4³⁰ P.M., had supper & then went out to Dolby. Came home at 9⁴⁰ P.M. 21. Friday We left Wingåker at 9 A.M. Went to Baggetorp on train. Called at Tornbloms and also at Christina’s Lindellthen. We went to Kasambol bruk & tracted. I arrived at Kathrineholm at 4 P.M. & Bro. Lindstrom came a few minutes later. Came home on the 6⁴⁰ P.M. train. Got home at 7⁴⁰ P.M. 22. Saturday After breakfast I went to the post office & then came home and stayed the rest of the day and evening. 23. Sunday Held S.S. at 11 A.M. After that we had some dinner. Sister Petterson, Karin and Sister Johnson dined with us. In the evening we went out to sister Charlotta Vik’s and came home at 11 P.M. 24. Monday After breadfast I went down to the post office and then came home and stayed the rest of the day and evening. Sister Karin Petterson called on us a few minutes in the afternoon. 25. Tuesday We had breakfast and then Bro Lindstrom left for the Shoemaker’s. I went down and got the mail. Also received [always spelled “recieve(d)”] a package for Lindstrom at the railway station. I then came home and stayed the rest of the day & evening. Bro. Lindstrom did not come home. 26. Wednesday I made a trip down to the station & then stayed home the rest of the day & evening. Bro. L[indstrom]. came home in the evening. 27. Thursday Was at home all day. Made one trip down to the post office. It snowed and blowed all day. 28. Friday The weather was some[what] better. I cut some wood in the afternoon. Bro. L[instrom] went out to Brita Maja’s. Came home at 5 P.M. Spent the evening at home. 29. Saturday The weather was still stormy. Stay[ed] home until 3³⁰ P.M. and then went down and bought some grub for Sunday. Spent the evening at home. Received a card from Johnson in Skeminge & one from Erickson in Småland. 30. Sunday Held Sunday School at 11 A.M. and in the evening we went to Edlund and spent a couple of hours, then came home. 31. Monday Was at home until 1 P.M. We then went out to Stenkullen, had some dinner, then went over to Dalby to get some potatoes. Came home at 10 P.M.

February 1910.

1. Tuesday After breakfast I went down to the post office and sent A. Geo. Lavin his book. I then came home and stayed the rest of the day & evening. 2. Wednesday Sister Keding called before I was out of bed. I got up & she came in. Sister Johnson also called at the same time. I was home all day & evening. 3. Thursday I went down to the post office. Got cards from Bill & Heber Johnson. I then came home and stayed all day & evening. Bro. Lindstrom went out to the shoemaker’s Palmqvist. 4. Friday I was intending to go out to Mon, but as it snowed all day I stayed home. I received a letter from home stating that Pa was sick with the pneumonia [spelled “ponemonia”]. I was at home all day & evening. 5. Saturday I was home all day and evening. 6. Sunday Left home at 8⁴⁵ A.M. Went out to Bilsbro where Fast meeting was held at 11 A.M. After meeting we had some dinner & then came home. Called in at Palmqvists on the way. Got home at 6 P.M. & stayed all evening. 7. Monday After breakfast I went out and cut some wood and in the afternoon we went down and met [always spelled “meet”] Pres. Erickson. He came on the 4²⁰ P.M. train. We then came home, had some supper & then spent the evening at home. 8. Tuesday After breakfast Bro. L[indstrom] & Pres. E[rickson] started for Bilsbro and I went down to the post office and walked along the track & met them at Bilsbro. We had dinner. Bro. Lindstrom then went home as he had such a toothache. I & Pres. E[rickson] went out to Ålunds and held meeting, a public one at 8 P.M. Stayed at Ålunds all night. 9. Wednesday We stayed at Ålunds until 2²⁰ P.M. & missed the three train, so we walked home. Pres. Erickson visited some friends at the station. I went home & stayed all evening. Lindstrom was also at home. Pres. came home in the evening. 10. Thursday I was at home all day. Pres. was out visiting friends. We went out to Baghålla and held meeting at 8 P.M. Had a good meeting. Came home after meeting. Bro. Lindstrom & Pres were the speakers at the meeting. 11. Friday I went down to the station before breakfast and the rest of the day I was at home. The president was out all day. Came home in the evening. 12. Saturday I was at home all day cleaning house and cooking. In the evening I made a trip down to the bakery. Edlund called on us in the evening and visited a while. 13. Sunday Held S.S. at 11 A.M. The Relief Society held meeting after S.S. and at two P.M. we held public Meeting. Nephi Petterson & Pres. Erickson spoke. I, Lindstrom & the Pres. went out to Stenkullen & spent the evening. Sister Johnson was there. Got home at 10³⁰ P.M. I also received a letter from home stating that Pa was very sick. 14. Monday After breakfast I went down to the post office, but did not receive any mail. Met Nephi Petterson & his two cousins. I then came home & went out to Stenkullen & arranged [always spelled “arrainged”] for a meeting Tuesday evening. I then came home & in the evening we were all three out at Dolby. Came home at 10³⁰ P.M. 15. Tuesday After breakfast I went down to the post office. I then came home & stayed until meeting time. We then all went out to Skarbeck, where we had a good meeting. After meeting we went to Ericks Pettersons & had supper, then came home at 11³⁰ P.M. 16. Wednesday After breakfast President & Lindstrom started for Swanvik & I stayed home & got the mail. I received a letter from Hilma stating that father died the 25 of Jan. I went to Baggetorp on the 3 P.M. train & then walked over to Swanvik, where we held meeting. Stayed there all night. 17. Thursday We left Swanvik at 12¹⁵ A.M. [sic.] for Baggetorp. The President left for Norrkõping on the 3¹³ P.M. train & I & Lindstrom came home on the 3⁵⁴ P.M. train. The evening was very stormy. It snowed & and blowed. Spent the evening at home. 18. Friday After breakfast I wrote a letter to Hilma. I then went down & mailed it. I was at home the rest of the day. Cut a little wood. In the evening I wrote a letter to X. 19. Saturday Was at home all day and evening. 20. Sunday Held S.S. at 11. A.M. After S.S. I walked down to the post office in company with Bro. Edlund. I got two letters: one from Bill & one from Otto. In the evening we went out to Dalby & had some lutfisk. Got home at 9 P.M. 21. Monday Was at home in the forenoon and went down tothe station at 4 P.M. I was not feel very well. Had a little cold. Spent the evening at home. Bros. Johnson & Alqvist from Eskilstuna called in on us & stayed over night. 22. Tuesday Was at home most of the day. Bro. Johnson & Alqvist stayed with us all day. I and Alqvist went down to the post office in the evening, then came home. Blom, the blacksmith, visited us a while in the evening. 23. Wednesday After breakfast Bros Johnson & Alqvist left on the 9 A.M. train. Bro Lindstrom went out & visited Brita Maja’s. I stayed home as I was not feeling very well. Spent the evening at home. 24. Thursday I was still a little under the weather, so I was at home all day & evening. 25. Friday Felt a little better this morning. Went down to the post office and in the evening we went out to Stenkullen. Came home at 9³⁰ P.M. 26. Saturday I was at home in the forenoon. Ivar Johnson called & invited us out to his mother in the evening, Selma Ålund. Came home with Bro. Lindstrom when he came from the post office and in the evening we went to Dalby. Got home at 10 P.M. 27. Sunday Held S.S. at 11 A.M. It was well attended, after which we had some dinner. Sisters Johnson & Ålund had dinner with us. I went down to the Depot with Sister Ålund. Spent the evening at home. 28. Monday After breakfast I went down to the depot & got the mail. I cut some wood in the afternoon. It rained all day. Spent the evening at home.

March 1910.

1. Tuesday Left home on the 9 A.M. train. Got off the train at Baggetorp and tracted. We were going to cross the lake but the ice was broke loose from the shore, so we went around via of Kärmbol & tracted on the road to Strångsjo station & then took the train home. Got home at 7¹⁸ P.M. Spent the evening at home. 2. Wednesday Was at home all forenoon. I made a trip down to the post office in the afternoon. Spent the evening at home. 3. Thursday After breakfast I went down to the post office & got the Stars. Then came home & stayed the rest of the day & evening. Waldmar Johnson called & delivered my watch charm. Johan Larson also called in the afternoon. 4. Friday After breakfast I went out to Stenkullen with the Star, but she was not at home. I then went to Sisters Nyqvists with her Stars, and then came home. In the afternoon I went down to the shoemaker’s & got a pair of shoes. And then came home & spent the evening. 5. Saturday I went down to the post office & then came home, after which we went out to Swanvik in the afternoon. Got there at 5³⁰ P.M. We stayed there all night. 6. Sunday We left Swanvik at 8 A.M., went to Persorp & held Fast meeting. After meeting we had dinner & then went over to Forstorp & held a public meeting at 7³⁰ P.M., which was well attended. Some had to stand outside as there was no room for them. We stayed at Forstorp all night. 7. Monday Left Forstorp at 11 A.M. for Botten. We tracted on the way. Met with good success. I got to Botten a little while before Lindstrom & after he came I went over to Björklund with the Star’s, and then I returned to Botten & stayed all night. 8. Tuesday Left Botten at 7³⁰, went over to Pasttorp, & then we started for Girtorp. I went one way & Bro L[indstrom] went another. I did not go to Girtorp, but went across the Öljarn at Väsby over to Osteråker & through the woods home. Called at Stenkullen, but Sister Petterson was not at home. Bro L[indstrom] came home at 10 P.M. 9. Wednesday Was at home all forenoon. I went down to the post office in the afternoon. Came home & stayed the rest of the day & evening. 10. Thursday I was att home all day. Bro. Lindstrom went down to the post office. He met Nephi Petterson. In the afternoon Lindstrom went out visiting saints towards Ås. I spent the evening at home. 11. Friday Nephi Petterson called in the forenoon & visited a while. He was on his home journey. In the evening I went out to Stenkullen. Came home at 9³⁰ P.M. & found Lindstrom home. 12. Saturday I went down to the depot too see Nephi Petterson off on the 9 A.M. train. He was on his home journey. I then came home, had breakfast & then took a bath. In the evening at 5 P.M. I went down to the post office. Spent the evening at home. 13. Sunday Held S.S. at 11 A.M. Our lesson was the 26^th of Acts and the 4 chapter [spelled “chapture”] of Ether’s [spelled Ester’s] book in the book of Mormon. Was at home all day and evening. 14. Monday Was at home all day, and evening. 15. Tuesday Was at home all day & evening. 16. Wednesday I left Vingåker on 11³⁵ A.M. train. Went to Kikmo & then tracted on the road to Högsjö bruk. Got to Högsjö station at 6³⁰ P.M. and came home on the 9¹⁶ P.M. train. 17. Thursday We left home at 10 A.M. Went to Brita Maja’s where the Relief Society held a meeting. We came home at 4 P.M. and spent the evening at home. 18. Friday I went down to the post office at one P.M. and got some tracts & book at the railway station. In the afternoon I went down and bought some bread, talked with a couple of Dem[ocratic] Socialists. Spent the evening at home. 19. Saturday Annunciation Bro. L[indstrom] went out to Dalby. I stayed home & went to the post office, then went out to Dalby. After which we went over to Stenkullen to get Sister Peterson’s emigration list filled out. Came home at 8 P.M. 20. Sunday I went down & mailed a letter, came home & then we went out to Mon and held Grenesmöte at 11 A.M. The Relief Society also held a meeting. We had dinner & then came home. Had Sister Peterson & Johnson for company. Spent the e. at home. 21. Monday Was at home most of the day. I made one trip to the station. I also took my washing out to Sisters Peterson’s & then came home. Spent the evening at home. 22. Tuesday Was at home most of the day. Cut some wood & made a couple of trips down to the Station. Waldmar Johnson called & left a bundle. Spent the evening at home. 23. Wednesday Was at home most of the day. Made one trip down to the post office. Spent the evening at home. 24. Thursday Was at home all forenoon. A special [spelled “spectiel”] peddler called & I talked with him for one hour. He left. I then went out to Palmqvists with a pair of shoes. Palmqvist was sick. Came home and spent the evening at home. 25. Friday Good Friday I went down to the post office at 1 P.M. & then came home. We went out too Stenkullen and came home at 8 P.M. 26. Saturday After breakfast I went down to the post office and then came home. In the afternoon I rode out to Sister Johnson. Stayed a short time & then came home. Spent the evening at home. 27. Sunday Easter We held S.S. at 11 A.M. It was well attended. At 4 P.M. we went out to Dalby & spent the evening. Came home at 9 P.M. 28. Monday Second Easter I went down to the post office at 1 P.M. After I came home, we went out to Stenkullen & came home via Dalby. Got home at 9³⁰ P.M. Gustofson from Kantorp called in the forenoon & asked for Pres. Erickson. 29. Tuesday Was at home all forenoon. I then went down to the post office. Came home & stayed the rest of the day & evening. Also took a trip to the wash woman with my laundry in the afternoon. 30. Wednesday Left home at 10 A.M. Went to Vestervik. Per Erickson was not at home. We then went on down towards Beckershof & tracted along the road. We stayed at C. E. Munter’s at night. His wife was not feeling well but he let us stay anyway. 31. Thursday Left Munters at 8 A.M. Called at his daughters place at Frossa. I & Bro. Lindstrom then parted. I tracted one way & he tracted the other. I called at Astugan, but there was only an old man home. But I told him my errand. I then tracted on the road to Wera & over to Strångsjö & came home on the evening train. Arrived at 7⁴⁰ P.M.

April 1910.

1. Friday After breakfast Keding called. He wanted me to go out to Stenkullen & see Sister Peterson. I went & then I went down to the post office. I met Keding on the way & informed him about Sister Petterson. Bro. L[indstrom] came home at 5 P.M. I went out to Stenkullen & told Sister P[etterson] that she need not go to Swenvik. Spent the evening at home. 2. Saturday I was at home all forenoon pressing my clothes. In the afternoon Bro. Johan Larson came with a load of wood. After which I had a bath & spent the evening at home. 3. Sunday We left home at 7⁴⁵ A.M. for Bilsbro. Held fast meeting at 11 A.M. and a public meeting at 2³⁰ P.M. After which we had dinner & then came home. We had Sister Johnson in company. Spent the evening at home. 4. Monday Left Wingåker at 9 A.M. for Stockholm. Arrived at 12³⁰ A.M. [sic.] Went up to the office. Called on President Sundvall & then he & I went down to the U.S. Counsel & I got my passport renewed. We then went back to the office & had dinner. Spent the afternoon with Bro. Westenschow taking in the town & the evening was spent in priesthood meeting. 5. Tuesday After breakfast I went out to Ekensberg & called on mother sister & her husband. They were well & seemed to be pleased to meet me. I went back to town at 3 P.M. Spent the remainder ot the afternoon at the office. Left Stockholm at 6¹⁵ P.M. & arrived in Wingåker at 9³⁰ P.M. 6. Wednesday The first thing I done was go down to the store & buy some sisll for breakfast and the rest of the day I stayed also in the evening. Bro. Lindstrom went out to Brita Maja’s in the afternoon. 7. Thursday After I had been down to the post office, I started for Botten. Called at Albertina Olson’s at Väsby & left her Star’s. I then went to Botten. Was there a few minutes & then went over to Björklund for a short time & then came back to Botten & stayed all night. 8. Friday I left Botten at 8 A.M. for Forstorp via Bie. Tracted on the road. Arrived at Forstorp at 1 P.M. Had some dinner & then went over to Perstorp. There was no one home. Left the star in the fösta then came home & spent the evening. 9. Saturday I had breakfast & then went down to the post office. Received a letter from B.Y. Monson. I then came home & stayed the rest of the day & evening. 10. Sunday Held S.S. at 11 A.M. which was well attended. Was at home all day. Sister Johnson called in the evening. She had been out to Brita Maja’s. She stated that Brita Maja was sick. We spent the evening at home. 11. Monday I was at home all forenoon. Towards evening I took my wheel down to the repair shop to have it sold. I also went down to the post office, but got no mail. Spent the evening at home. 12. Tuesday After breakfast Bro. Lindstrom left for Ås. I went down to the post office in the afternoon. Was at home the rest of the day. Bro. Roni Alqvist from Eskilstuna came at 7¹⁸ P.M. & stayed all night. 13. Wednesday After breakfast I & Alqvist went out to Brita Maja’s to find Johanslund. But she informed us it was out towards Bosenberga, so we came back & went out there & took some photos of Johanslunds. We then came home & spent the evening. 14. Thursday I & Alqvist left Wingaker on the 9 A.M. train. Alqvist went to Eskilstuna & I got off at Katherinaholm & tracted to Strångsjo station with good success. I came home on the train. Got home at 7⁴⁵ P.M. Bro. Lindstrom was home. Spent the evening at home. 15. Friday I went down to the post office at 12⁰⁰ A.M. [noon] Got a card from Alma Monson. Called at the repair shop & got my wheel. In the evening we went out to Stenkullen & had supper. Came home at 9 P.M. At 12 P.M. [midnight] somebody knocked on the window & shouted “fire!” We got up & went to the fire. It was at Åsen’s Loge. Went to bed again at 1 P.M. 16. Saturday Was at home all day and evening. 17. Sunday Held gränes möte [branch meeting] at 11 A.M. and after that the Relief Society held meeting. In the afternoon we went out to Brita Maja’s & held a public meeting at 3³⁰ P.M. Called at Edlund as we came home. Got home at 8 P.M. 18. Monday I rode down to the post office but got no mail. In the afternoon we went out too Bilsbro to Rosin’s where we stayed and had supper and stayed all night. It rained in the evening. 19. Tuesday Left Rosin’s at 10 A.M. I went home along the railroad, & Bro. L[instrom] went via Palmqvist’s. I got home first. We spent the evening at home. 20. Wednesday After breakfast Bro. L[indstrom] went down to the post office. I went down & took in the Markmal. In the afternoon some of the saints called & some of them stayed & had dinner with us. Spent the evening at home. 21. Thursday After breakfast I cut Bro. L[indstrom’s] hair & then I went down to the post office. Blom the blacksmith called & talked a while. In the afternoon I pressed some clothes. 22. Friday Left Wingåker at 9 A.M. & came to Norrköping at 12¹³ A.M. In the afternoon went and took a bath. In the evening took a walk around town & also spent some time at the office. 23. Saturday After breakfast I went up to Phenix & ordered some postal cards. In the afternoon took a walk around town. In the evening at 7 P.M. the first meeting of our conference was held. It was very well attended. 24. Sunday Our conference continued at 11 A.M. after which we had some dinner & the meeting at three. Also held the last meeting of our conference at 7 P.M. We had a good conference, but it could have been better attended. 25. Monday Was at the Office most of the day. Attended Priesthood meeting at 10 A.M. We had our photos taken in the afternoon. Attended a social at the hall in the evening. 26. Tuesday Was in Nørrköping all day. 27. Wednesday I, Lindstrom & Larson went to Wingåker on the 1⁵⁸ P.M. train. Arrived at Wingåker at 4²⁰ P.M. and spent the evening at Wilhelmsberg. 28. Thursday After breakfast I rode down to the post office, after which we all three went out to Stenkullen via Dalby. I painted Sister Petterson’s name on her trunk. Then we went to Dalby for supper. Got home at 11 P.M. 29. Friday We had breakfast & then I pressed my clothes. I & Larson left Wingåker at 3 P.M. We talked to Elder Stenqvist from Örebro a few minutes at Katherinaholm. We arrived in Norrköping at 5 P.M. & spent the evening at the Office. 30. Saturday Was at the office most of the day. In the evening a few of us elders and some saints went out to Folkets park to see the May bone fires. We got home at 11³⁰ P.M.

May 1910.

1. Sunday Attended S.S. at 11 A.M., Fast Meeting at 3 P.M. and a public meeting at 6 P.M. and the remainder of the evening was spent at office & a short walk out on the South prominade with Swenson. 2. Monday Stayed at the office until 1²⁰ P.M., then we went down & said goodbye to J.W. Johnson. He went to Stockholm. Bros J. Monson & P.F. Swenson went to Lindköping on the 2²⁶ train. I & Bro. Larson then went out to Samuelsons & spent the afternoon. I went down & saw the wax works in the evening. 3. Tuesday I was at the Norrköping office in the forenoon. At 2²⁶ P.M. I, Larson & Edwin Erickson left for Gamleby arriving at 6⁵¹ P.M. We then went up to our cabin, had supper & then visited Sister Clara Olson. 4. Wednesday Was at home most of the day. I and Larson walked down and took in the town. Erikson took my wheel & went to Vestervik & bought him one. We all spent the evening at home. 5. Thursday. Ascension of Christ We were at home all day. A man by the name of Hjelmberg called and we talked with him a while. 6. Friday I and Erickson went down and bought a map of Gamleby. Stayed home until evening. Then I & Larson went down to the station & met Alma Monson. Spent the evening at home. 7. Saturday After breakfast I & Erickson cut some wood. We then went down & took a bath. We stayed home the rest of the day. In the evening we held meeting. I, Erickson, Larson & Monson were present. The meeting was not very well attended. 8. Sunday Larson & Monson left Strängnäs at 8³⁰ A.M. I & Erickson left at 9¹⁰ A.M. We were all going to Elgenäs, when I & Erickson overtook them. We gave them our wheels & we walked to Elgenäs. We held fast meeting at 11¹⁵ A.M. After meeting we had dinner & I & Erickson rode home on our wheels. Called at Sister Emma Pettersons. We then came home. We all spent the evening at Erickson, who lived in the Godtemplear local. 9. Monday We had breakfast & then Larson & Monson left on the 8⁴⁰ A.M. train for Öland via Westervik. It rained mostly all day. I and Erickson was at home all day & evening. 10. Tuesday Bro Erickson went down to the post office while I cooked breakfast. We were at home until 4 P.M. when we went & visited Fru Blom on an invitation. In the evening I went down town & bought some fish & bread. Talked to our Friend Erickson on the way home. Spent the evening at home. 11. Wednesday After breakfast we started out for Hälsberg, which lay three Swedish miles north of Gamleby. We arrived at 5 P.M. The saints, Bro. & Sister Nilson had been sick, but were feeling better at the time we arrived. We spent the night with them. 12. Thursday We had breakfast and then we held a little meeting after which we left the saints in good spirits. We tracted on the road to Fakerum, crossed the railroad track & proceeded on the way to Dalhem. Had a little [trouble] getting lodging, but succeded at 8 P.M. at a place called Fagesdal. The people were very obliging. 13. Friday We left Fagerdal at 8 A.M., tracted to Tyllinge & through the woods to Dalhem. We did not find the party we wanted, so we continued tracting on the road to Odensvi. Arrived home at 5 P.M. Spent the evening at home. 14. Saturday Was at home all day. 15. Sunday. Pentacost Was at home in the forenoon. In the afternoon we went over to Sister Clara Larson’s, but she was not at home. We then came home. Spent the evening at home. 16. Monday. Second Pentacost Was at home in the forenoon and in the afternoon. We walked down to the havn [harbor] & came home via Larson’s, but found no one at home. We went to an electric show in the evening. 17. Tuesday I went down to the post office. Got the Era & UtaPosten. Came home & had breakfast. Was at home until 4 P.M., then went over to a family by the name of Carlson’s & visited 2 hours. In the evening we called at Sister Larson’s, but she was not home. 18. Wednesday We left Gamleby at 11 A.M. Went to Westervik. We left our wheels at Herra Johanson’s. We then went & visited some saints by the name of Anderson. Sister Anderson told us to call in the evening, when Bro. Anderson [would be there], which we did & stayed for three hours. We slept at a rooming house. 19. Thursday Bro Erickson was not feeling well so he went home to Gamleby. I went down to Gamnebo & called on Bro. Wannfeldt. I then rode over to Fårhult & then proceeded on the road to Gamleby and tracted along the road. I got home & after supper we called on Sister Larson & got our washing. 20. Friday Was at home all day. 21. Saturday After breakfast we went down and took a bath and then came home & stayed the rest of the day and evening. 22. Sunday Was at home all forenoon. In the evening we took our washing over to Sister Larson’s and then walked down to the pier & stayed there a while. Came home & stayed the rest of the evening. 23. Monday Was at home all day writing letters. Spent the evening at home. 24. Tuesday Left Gamleby at 10³⁰ A.M. for Wästervik. I met with an accident & had to come home & get my wheel repaired, after which I continued my journey. Arrived in Vestervik at 3 P.M. Called at Johanson’s & then I and Erickson called on some friends. There were some of the friends that were not at home. We spent the evening at the lodging house. 25. Wednesday We left Westervik at 9 A.M. Called at Sven A. Naunfeldt & then proceeded on down to Smedsmåla. We also tracted on the road. Arrived at Smedsmåla at 7 P.M. & stayed all night. 26. Thursday Held a Fast Meeting at 8³⁰ A.M., then we had breakfast & left. Tracted on the road towards Sotebo station & on up towards Grönhult. We could not get any place to stay. We tried until after 8 P.M., then we started for home. Arrived at 9³⁰ P.M. 27. Friday After breakfast we washed the dishes. Answered a letter, then went down & mailed it. Was at home most of the day. Herr Erickson called on us in the evening & we talked until bed time. 28. Saturday Was at home all day & evening. 29. Sunday Was at home in the forenoon. In the afternoon we called on sister Larson a couple of hours, then came home. In the evening Herr Erickson called & asked us to take a walk with him, which we did & came home at 10 P.M. 30. Monday I went down & bought some butter, then came home & had breakfast. In the afternoon I went down & bought some butter for Fru Blom. Spent the evening at home. The weather was rainy. 31. Tuesday The weather was still rainy, so we stayed home and did not go out tracting.

June 1910.

1. Wednesday Was at home all day. 2. Thursday Was at home in the forenoon. In the afternoon we went to call on Charlotta Svenson, but she was not home, so we called in at Karlson’s & talked a while. Mrs. Swenson called while we were there. Spent the evening at home. 3. Friday Left Gamleby at 9³⁰ A.M. for Westervik. When we got to Westervik we called at Johanson’s & left our wheels. & then we called on a lady that lives on fiskesgatan [Fish Street]. Was going to call on a lady at Stensborg, but she was not at home. Came home and got some Kaffee at Carlsons & spent the evening at Mormons Lottas. 4. Saturday Was at home all day. In the evening we went over to Erickson & talked to Signe. Came home at 9 P.M. 5. Sunday Left Gamleby at 9³⁰ A.M. Went to Winö & held fast meeting at Bro. Victor Törnberg home, after which we had dinner & then came home. In the evening we went to a meeting & hear a woman preacher from India. 6. Monday Was at home the most of the day. In the afternoon I went down to the bank & cashed a draft for 90.Kr. In the evening I took some wash down to Sister Clara’s, but she was not home, so I came home & spent the evening. 7. Tuesday We were going to Hvetlanda, but Bro. Erickson had a sore toe, so we could not go. Stayed home all day & evening. 8. Wednesday Left Gamleby at 10³⁰ A.M. Called at Dalhem at Josephine Larson & then rode on out to Tyfbo & called on an old saint. She had not been visited for two years. I then started to tract on the road to Björkfors. I stayed at the postmasters in Björkfors overnight. 9. Thursday Left Björkfors at 9 A.M. and tracted past Idhult. I then went through the wood to Odensvi. Came in contact with several houses and met with good success. Got home at 6³⁰ P.M. Spent the evening at home. 10. Friday Was at home all day. Wrote a letter to Russ Johnson. Spent the evening at home. 11. Saturday Was at home all day & evening. 12. Sunday Was at home in the forenoon. In the afternoon we went over to Sister Lassons a little while and in the evening we took a walk with Herr Erickson too Nygårdsöng & then came home at 10 P.M. 13. Monday We were going to Hvetlanda, but my wheel was punctured so I had to get it fixed and we postponed [“posponded”] the trip. In the afternoon we went down to the hamm [harbor] a little while. Spent the evening at home. 14. Tuesday We left Gamleby at 11³⁰ A.M. Went past Törnfalla & Bro. Ericksons wheel got punctured & he went home. I tracted a little. Called at Gunnebo and then went to Smedsmåla and stayed all night. 15. Wednesday Had breakfast & then I left Smedsmåla at 10 A.M. Tracted on the road to Kristdala. I arrived at Kristdala at 7 P.M. I stayed at the hotel over night. 16. Thursday Left Kristdala at 9 A.M. Tracted on the road down towards Bohult and then when I got to the big road I tracted towards Oscarshamm. Got in Oscarshamm at 6³⁰ P.M. and stayed all night at 133 Slottsgatan. 17. Friday The first thing I done after breakfast was to find out the finest boat that went to Westervik and then I proceeded to find Lindgren. & I found where he lived and also where his son lived, but they were both out to work. So I did not get to see them. I left Oscarhamm at 6 P.M. on Östern. Arrived in Westervik at 10²⁰ P.M. and at Gamleby at 12¹⁵ P.M. 18. Saturday I was at home all day. In the evening I and Bro. Erickson went to a show. After the show we came home & went to bed. 19. Sunday Was at home until 2 P.M. We then went over to Karkons and visited for three hours after which I went and mailed a couple of letters. Spent the evening at home. 20. Monday I went down to the post office & brought home Bro. Eirckson bicycle tire. I was home the rest of the day. Bro. E[rickson] went out tracting. In the evening we were at home. 21. Tuesday Left Gamleby at 10³⁰ A.M. and tracted on the road to Westra Tryserum. Got there at 6 P.M. Stayed all night. Bro. Nilson was not feeling very well. 22. Wednesday Left Nilson’s at 9³⁰ A.M. for Norrköping. Tracted a little in the forenoon. We arrived in Norrköping at 6 P.M. Went to the Automat for supper. Spent the evening at the office. 23. Thursday In the forenoon I & Bro. Erickson went and took a bath. And in the afternoon we went out to Samuelson’s. All the elders went and some of the saints. We also spent the evening at Samuelson’s. 24. Friday. John the Baptist Day The Norrköping choir & some of the saints went out to Grabersfors & I & Erickson also went. We all played games and had picnic all day. Got back to Norrköping at 10³⁰ P.M. 25. Saturday Was at the Norrköping office in the forenoon. And in the afternoon all the elders went down to Viden’s & had dinner & I, Wall & Christianson stayed for supper. Got home at 10 P.M. 26. Sunday Attended Sunday School at 11 A.M. Then I & Erickson left Norrköping at 2²⁶ P.M. for Lindköping. Arrived O.K. The Elders in Lindköping were going to hold meeting, but there was no one came. We stayed all night. 27. Monday Was in Lindköping all day. The weather was rainy. I and Bro. Monson went out and bargained for a wheel for Monson. Spent the evening at the Elders residence in Lindköping. 28. Tuesday We were in the house all forenoon. In the afternoon I & Swenson walked out to Malmslägt & Bro. Monson & Erickson rode out on wheels. We watched the soldiers drill and then came to town again. Spent the evening at home. 29. Wednesday I & Bro. Erickson left Lindköping at 1³⁰ P.M. Bro. Monson rode out a mile with us. We journeyed to Forseström and stayed there all night with Saints by the name of Asklunds. 30. Thursday We left Asklunds at 9³⁰ A.M. and journeyed towards Gamleby. The weather looked stormy, so we did not do any tracting. Arrived home at 4 P.M. I went down to the post office & we spent the evening at home.

July 1910.

1. Friday I was at home most of the day. Bro. Erickson went down to the post office. In the afternoon we took coffee with Frue [Mrs.] Blom our värdinna [landlady]. Spent the evening at home. 2. Saturday Was at home all day. In the evening we went to a circus. Went to bed at 11 P.M. 3. Sunday Left Gamleby at 10 A.M. Went to Elgenäs & held Fast Meeting, then had dinner & came home at 5 P.M. Was at home in the evening. 4. Monday Was at home all forenoon. In the afternoon I went down an got my hair cut. We spent the evening at friends by the name of Ericksons & then called at Sister Larson’s & got our washing. Got home at 10³⁰ P.M. 5. Tuesday Was at home all day. The weather was rainy. 6. Wednesday Was at home all day and also in the evening. 7. Thursday Was at home all day. The weather was still stormy. 8. Friday Was at home all day. In the evening I went down and talked to Erickson and Fru Blom. 9. Saturday Was at home all day. The weather was still stormy. 10. Sunday Was at home all day. The weather was very rainy. Also spent the evening at home. 11. Monday Was at home all day and evening. 12. Tuesaday I left home at 10³⁰ A.M. and rode out to Johanson’s. Had dinner at Johansons. After dinner I talked to Alma Johnason about her affair and she gave me no answer. I then left & called on sister Petterson in Tingstad. She was not home, but I met her on the road then went home and spent the evening. 13. Wednesday Left Gamleby at 10 A.M. for Hvetlanda. Tracted a while on the road. Stayed in Vimmersby over night at a Private Hotel. Spent the evening at the Hotel. 14. Thursday Left Wimmerby at 9 A.M. and we rode until 5 P.M. when we landed in Hvetlanda. We stayed with an old sister at Karlslund. Bro. Erickson broke his wheel. 15. Friday I left Karlslund Hvetlanda at 10 A.M. and tracted out towards Akeda and then up to Lamåsa. I punctured my wheel at 3³⁰ P.M. but got it fixed up at a blacksmith shop. Got home at 6³⁰ P.M. at Karlslund. 16. Saturday I & Bro. Erickson got our wheels fixed up in the forenoon & in the afternoon we rode out to Bro. Lindgrens at Landsbro and also out to Sageräng & called on Bro. Kahlson after which we came back to Karlslund at 7 P.M. 17. Sunday At eleven o’clock we held a Sacrament meeting with Sister Petterson at Karklund and in the afternoon we carried in a few armfuls of hay, so as it would not get wet. Spent the evening at Karlslund. 18. Monday We left Karlslund at 9³⁰ A.M. Called at Klockalund on an old Sister Hogenauson after which we then proceeded to tract. I & Bro. Erickson parted. I got back at 7 P.M. and then Bro. Erickson had been home one hour. 19. Tuesday Left Hvetlanda at 10 A.M. & traveled southeast and tracted. We were going to stay at Stenberga, but when we got there, we could find no place to stay, so we rode to Werserum. The Hotel was full, but we got in the Gästgifuragård. Met dorkey from England and slept in the same room as he did. 20. Wednesday Left Wirserum at 7 A.M. and tracted to Mårlunda. Had several good conversations with the people. Rode to Målilla and stayed all night in the hotel. 21. Thursday Left Målilla at 8 A.M. and tracted to Hvena, then we rode direct to Spångsnäs and called at Hilda Wassgren’s. She was feeling rather despondent as she had been sick for over 14 years and the Elders had administered to her and she was no better. We left Spongsnäs & rode to Wimmerby & stayed all night at room fär mande [for let]. 22. Friday Left Wimmerby at 9³⁰ A.M. on the train for Gamleby. It had rained all night so we could not ride our wheels home. Got home at 1³⁰ P.M. I called at the shoemakers & got my shoes. Called on Lotta Svenson on the way home & talked to her brother from Alaba[ma?]. Spent the evening at Saints. 23. Saturday Was at home all forenoon. In the afternoon we went down & had a bath. In the evening I went & got my shoes & called at Lotta Svenson’s & talked English to her brother. I then came home & spent the evening. 24. Sunday Was at home all day. In the evening we walked down to the pier and as we came home we stopped at Ericksons and spent the evening. 25. Monday Was at home all day and also in the evening. 26. Tuesday Was at home in the forenoon and in the afternoon we called on the Karlson family a couple of hours and then came home in the evening. We went over to Ericksons and heard four men playing. The music was fine. 27. Wednesday We left Gamleby at 11⁴⁵ A.M. & rode to Westervik. Left our wheels at Johanson’s & went & called on Anderson. There was only Sister Anderson home. Bro. Anderson was out at sea. In the evening we called at Johansons for three hours. Stayed at the Private Hotel Westervik. 28. Thursday Spent a couple of hours at the pier. Met a man Man by the name of Norman. His wife came on the boat at 11³⁰ A.M. We then went to a mat servering & got some dinner. Called at Fiskeregatan 3, but there was no one at home. We then went up to Johanson and came home. 29. Friday Was at home all day. In the evening we called at Erickson a short time & then walked down town and came home. 30. Saturday was at home all day and evening. 31. Sunday Was at home all forenoon. In the afternoon we called on Karlson a family that are friendly towards us. Spent the evening at home.

August 1910.

1. Monday Was at home all day. We received some wood that that we had ordered for some time. I also spent the evening at home. 2. Tuesday I left home at 11 A.M. rode out to Tingstad. Sister Petterson was not at home so I left her Star with the neighbors. I also called at the poor house on one of the saints there, but she was so deaf that I could not talk to her, then came home. Spent the evening at home. 3. Wednesday Was at home all forenoon. In the afternoon we were invited to coffee at Fru Blooms. We stayed a couple of hours. In the evening had a talk with two men. Called on Sister Larson, but she was not home. Came home & went to bed. 4. Thursday Left Gamleby at 11 A.M. Rode down to Westervik. Called at Johanson’s & left the Star, after which we went down town & came back in the evening. We called on Pettersons, some friends. We also went & called on another investigator, but she could not invite us in. So we went to the Private Hotel. 5. Friday We called at Fiskeregatan 3 & got our paper the “Utah Post” and then we went up to Johanson & got our wheels and came home, after which it started to rain. Stayed home in the evening. 6. Saturday Was at home all day and evening. There was one continual down pour of rain all day. 7. Sunday We started for Vinö at 8 A.M., walked out about two miles English got wet through & then turned around & came home. I went to a Baptist meeting in the afternoon. Stayed home in the evening. 8. Monday We were at home all day. In the afternoon I went down & got my hair cut. In the evening we were at Sister Clara Lasson’s. Came home at 10 P.M. 9. Tuesday Left Gamleby at 11 A.M., rode out to Vinö, called on Victor’s Tornbergs. Had dinner & then I went over to Elgenäs after which I came home. In the evening we went & heard a Socialist speak. Got home at 10 P.M. 10. Wednesday Left Gamleby at 11 A.M. for Westra Trysrun. Tracted on the road. Got to Westra Trysrun at 6 P.M. and stayed all night. Found the saints feeling fine. 11. Thursday We held a sacrament in the morning, then we left & tracted on to Forsaström. Arrived at 6 P.M. We stayed with some saints by name of Asklunds. 12. Friday Left Asklund at 9²⁰ A.M. and rode to Norrköping. It took us seven hours. We arrived O.K. at 4 P.M. then went down & had a bath. In the evening we went to a picture show. Got home at 10 P.M. 13 Saturday Was at Norrköping office most of the day. I borrowed 65.Kr of Dan Swenson & bought a suit of clothes of Clement Jenson and I took them down to LindeKrantz’s. In the evening talked to Fru Lindkrz. Willard Hendricks went with me. Spent the evening at the office. 14 Sunday Went to S.S. at 11 A.M. I & E. Erickson called on some non-members a couple of hours. Then came home to Relief Society meeting at three P.M. Also attended meeting at 6 P.M. Willard Hendricks, Clement Jenson & Pres. Erickson were the speakers. 15. Monday I was at home most of the day. In the evening attended a fest in the evening — the farewell fest of Pres. Erickson and the other missionaries that were leaving. They left on the 11²⁹ P.M. train. There was a large crowd at the station. 16. Tuesday After breakfast I & Bro. P. Swenson went up to Rockstrom, where Swenson bought some cloth for a pair of pants and then we took it down to Hvidens. At 1⁵⁸ P.M. we went down to the station & seen Bro Wall off for Vingåker. Spent the evening at office. 17. Wednesday After breakfast I, James Monson & P.F. Swenson called on Ohlins and visited there 4 hours. We then came home and stayed the rest of the day & evening. 18. Thursday After breakfast I & James Monson called on Samuelson’s. We visited for three hours. Larson & W. Swenson also called out there. In the evening attended Meeting. 19. Friday Was at the office in the forenoon. At 12⁴⁰ P.M. we seen Nels Swenson off & at 1⁵⁸ P.M. and I & Edwin Erickson left on the 2²⁶ P.M. train. Arrived at Gamleby at 6⁵⁷ P.M. In the evening Erickson “a friend” called on us & we talked Gospel for over am hour. 20. Saturday Was at home all day writing letters. Also spent the evening at home. I received a draft of 100.Krs and got it cashed. 21. Sunday We left Gamleby at 9³⁰ A.M. for Winö where we held fast meeting, after which we had dinner & came home. It rained so we got wet. Spent the evening at home. 22. Monday Was at home all day. In the evening I walked down to Sister Clara Larson to get my wash, but it was not ready, so I came home without it. 23. Tuesday After breakfast I went down and had a bath, after which I came home and stayed the rest of the day. In the evening we went down to Sister Clara Lassons & got our wash. 24. Wednesday Was at home all day and also in the evening. 25. Thursday Was at home all day & evening. 26. Friday I went down to the post office in the morning, came home & had breakfast & stayed the rest of the forenoon. Rode out to the Prestgård & called on some saints in the afternoon. Spent the evening at home. 27. Saturday Was at home all day and evening. 28. Sunday Was at home all forenoon. In the afternoon we went up to Nygårdsäng to a fest for a couple of hours, then came home. Was at home in the evening. 29. Monday Went to Westervik at noon, called at Johanson & left the star, went then went over to Stensborg, but nobody at home. We then called at Fiskaregatan & visited a little while. Got a su[b]scriber for the Star. Stayed at a friend hotel over night. 30. Tuesday Left Westervik at 10 A.M., called at Grimebo & then Bro. Erickson went home & I proceeded to Smedmöla. I arrived at 5³⁰ P.M. and found the saints there well. I stayed all night. 31. Wednesday I left Smedsmåla at 9³⁰ A.M. & went to Spåmgsnäs two miles & a half. Called on the sick girl for a couple of hours. She was pretty weak. I then came home 4½ miles. Got home at 6⁴⁵ P.M. Spent the evening at home. Bro. Erickson was at home.

September 1910.

1. Thursday Was at home all day and evening. 2. Friday Was at home all day and evening. 3. Saturday Was at home most of the day. We went down town and had a bath. In the evening we were visiting Sister Clara Larson. 4. Sunday Left Gamleby at 9 A.M. & rode to Elgenäs and held Fast Meeting. We had dinner after meeting & then we came home. Spent the evening at home. 5. Monday Was at home all day and evening. 6. Tuesday Received a letter from our President (Erickson) stating I was released to go & visit my relatives. My companion preferred to go with me as far as Norrköping. Bro. James Monson came at 3³⁰ P.M. So we told him to stay all night & we went to Norrköping on the 6 P.M. train from Gamleby. Arrived in Norrköping at 10³⁰ P.M. 7. Wednesday Was in Norrköping all day. Went & took a bath. Went to a show in the evening. Took my overcoat down to the tailors. 8. Thursday Was at the office all forenoon. At 1⁵⁸ P.M. I left for Wingåker & arrived 4³⁰ P.M. Bro Wall was home. I went out to Dalby & had supper & then came home. 9. Friday Left Wilhelmsberg at 11 A.M. went & called on Saints at Forstorp, Perstorp & Swanvik. I broke my wheel. Got home at 7 P.M. Spent the evening at home. 10. Saturday Left Wilhelmsberg at 12. Called at Billsbro & then went out to Ålunds. I and Bro. Wall came home to Wilhelmsberg at 10 P.M. Bro. Larson stayed at Ålund all night. 11. Sunday Attended Sunday School at Wilhelmsberg. Bro. Larson came home at 3 P.M. I & Bro. Wall called on Sister Nyqvist & Sister Christen. We got home at 9 P.M. 12. Monday I & Larson went out to Dalby & stayed an hour. The rest of the forenoon was spent at Wilhelmsberg. At 4 P.M. I, Larson & Wall went out to Dalby for supper, and came home at 10 P.M. 13. Tuesday After breakfast I & Larson went out to Stenkullen & called on the old Lady that lives there. Also called on Erick Petterson’s. We then went home & I left on the 3 P.M. train for Norrkoping. Spent the evening at the office. 14. Wednesday After breakfast I & Bro. Christiansen went down & had a bath. At 4 P.M. I & Pres. Erickson called on Victorsons and talked with them for three hours. In the evening I & P. Erickson went to a Baptist meeting. 15. Thursday Was at home in the forenoon. Left Norrköping at 1⁵⁸ P.M. & landed in Stockholm at 6³⁰ P.M. Called at the office and attended meeting in the evening. 16. Friday I & Bro. John Anderson went out in town with a boy by the name of Sven. We called on Bro. Anderson’s niece, after which we came home & spent the evening there. 17. Saturday After Breakfast we all went down & took a bath, after which I went out to Ekensberg. My Uncle & Aunt were out in the country. They had bought a farm. But cousin Lydia was home. I visited with her a while. In the evening I, Nelson & Swenson went to a show on Mose havn [?]. 18. Sunday Attended Sunday School at 9³⁰ A.M. Public [meeting] at 11 and also a public meeting at 6 P.M. After meeting I and Bro. Nelson walked home with Bro. John Anderson niece & sister. 19. Monday After breakfast I went out in town with Bros. Anderson & Oscarson. I got information on when the boat left for Wäddö. We then went to a clothing store & Bros. A[nderson] & O[scarson] bought some clothes. Stayed at the office the rest of the day. Attended mutual in the evening. 20. Tuesday I left Stockholm at 8 A.M. on the boat “Runa” & arrived at Bagghus at 4 P.M. Walked up to Rangarnö & found Cousin Mariana & Ester, Grandma & Aunt Johanna at home. Spent the evening & stayed all night. 21. Wednesday After breakfast I walked over to Boatsängen & talked for three hours. Came back & had dinner. Had coffee at Carlsons Margert in the evening, after which I & Cousin Ester walked down to Bagghus & brought home a box of pears. I then retired for the night. 22. Thursday Was at Rangarnö all day. Talked with Boatsängs Jannä as he was working around & repairing the ealer. Also worked a while in the Strawberry patch. Went to bed at 9 P.M. 23. Friday Was [at] Rangarnö all day & evening. 24. Saturday Had breakfast & then left for Ortala at 11 A.M. Arrived at 2 P.M. All the folks were well. Uncle, Aunt & the youngest cousin was home. Went to bed at 9 P.M. 25. Sunday Was at Ortala all day. Cousin Johan Westerlund came home from sea early in the morning. Had a talk with a lady whose man [husband] was in Armerica. She was visiting at the folks. Went to bed at 8³⁰ P.M. 26. Monday Left Ortala at 2³⁰ P.M. for Rangarnö and arrived at 5 P.M. They were all well at Rangarnö except Aunt Johanna. She had her usual sickness. Stayed at Rangarnö all night. 27. Tuesday After breakfast I started to get ready to leave & at 1³⁰ P.M. I left Bagghus on the boat for Stockholm. Arrived in Stockholm at 7³⁰ P.M. Stayed at Svartensgl. 3. Received a letter from home with a draft in it.
