Sir Hughe Knatchbull-Hugessen in Kentish Family (London, 1960) traces the lineage back in Mersham Hatch (par. Mersham) to Barham, the manor of Aldington, and the Hundred of Aloesbridge, Kent, England in 1272. To the later generations I have added the evidence from the parish registers of Mersham. The paucity of available recorded evidence makes the earliest generations suppositional. A careful consideration of the most likely chronology brings me to take the liberty of supposing that William, given by Sir Hughe as the oldest surviving son of Clement, was more likely father rather than older brother of Alphage.
