4.4 Modified NYSIIS rules.   The modified NYSIIS code is better equipped to make further distinctions in common names. The code results from adding some rules to the regular NYSIIS rules.

1.’ remember the original initial letter
2. at the beginning of the code change the following sequences of letters
k. change WR or RH to RR
l. change DG to GG
m. change any vowel [A, E, I, O, or U] to A3
3. at the end of the word change the following sequences of letters:
a. delete S or Z4
b.’ change YE to Y
d. change NP or ND to N
e. change IX to IC
f. change EX to EC
g. change JR or SR to blank5
4.’ make the following changes:
k. change non-final Y to A6
g.’ change final SCH to SSA7
g.” change non-final SCH to SSS7
l. change final SH to SA
m. change non-final SH to SS
n. change GHT to TTT
o. change DG to GG
p. change WR to RR
7. change an initial A or blank to the original first letter from step 1’

3Actually changing “A” to “A” is vacuous.

4Why this rule from the original NYSIIS is repeated here is not made clear.

5Presumably a blank is like null (so that ‘change’ becomes ‘delete’) except it can be identified in the new rule 7.

6Presumably this rule must follow 4j, since it would otherwise affect the condition of vowel and non-vowel (but perhaps that is intended).

7Presumably these rules supplant 4g, since it would otherwise have no effect.
