1.4 Structure of a compound surname. The compounding of surnames in English is similar to what happens with given names, but there is only one pool of names to select from.
The surname piece is possibly compound and thus similar to the given name in [PS3] and [PS5]. Here is an example of a name described by the iteration in [PS4]:

Sometimes people join these so-called double-barrel surnames with a hyphen. In (2) the second part of the two-part surname is itself composed of two pieces.

The example just given illustrates one situation where multiple words have combined to form the surname. There are a number of additional ways that may also be accounted for by rule. We discuss many of these possibilities in the next section.
