2.4 Cryptonyms. As another method of forming new names is somewhat more complicated from that of forming acronyms. The result is what I have called a cryptonym, a secret or especially formed name. The most straightforward process derives the given name Nivek from Kevin by reversing the order of its letters. The given name Nevaeh comes from the word heaven by the same process. This process forms what are called anagrams

The more significant and prominent example comes from the history and religion of ancient Israel. For these people it was especially important to keep the name of their god sacred. In fact, the name was not to be uttered except by the High Priest when he entered the Holy of Holies sanctuary of the temple on the day of atonement (Yom Kippur). Since this name was found in their holy scriptures, to avoid the inadvertent utterance of it while reading aloud, a special device was used to write it. The normal vowel points of the name were omitted and instead the vowel points of the word for “lord” were substituted. Hence, the name Jehovah romanizes a cannibalization from two separate and distinct Hebrew words. Sometimes the vowels for the word for “the name” were substituted instead. This resulted in the name transliterated to Yaweh, which looks like a nominal form of the verb “to be” suggesting that the name means something like “the self-existent one.” Its “meaning,” of course, is irrelevant; as with most proper names, it is its referent that is the reason for its use.
