1.7 Name coder. The final stage in the pipeline leading to standardization of names yields the authority key for the name string. The authority record is here supplied with a key, i.e, standard, which will serve as an index term for the entity whose identifier is being standardized. An application, such as the Common Pedigree Administration System, uses this object to store its personal name data along with its analysis and standards for each part analyzed. The entity’s proper name requires the NADS to provide all its name piece classification and standards. The NADS can give a personal name in an abbreviated form, for example, or in a form appropriate for alphabetizing according to the appropriate conventions of the culture(s) involved. Other service modules of the NADS interpret the name phrase and use access to the appropriate LEXICON to provide the particular values required. Figure 1 diagrams the elements of the structure required to maintain the most essential information in a proper name. These would be the elements of the personal name as seen by the Common Pedigree, those of certain parts of the calendar date as seen by the Date Authority, and those of the locality name as seen by the Locality Authority.
