2.3 Culture. Sometimes the same spelling is interpreted differently depending on the culture. Language is an important aspect of culture. For example, the pronunciation in English of the surnames “Beer” and “Bier” would motivate the English speaking expert to group the spellings together. Similarly she would probably group “Behr” with “Bear.” However, their pronunciation in German would motivate the German speaking expert to group “Beer” with “Behr” and “Bier” with “Bihr.” Only with an attribute referring to the culture are we allowed to distinguish these groupings and maintain them as different language versions when merged into the universal groups. A good illustration of how the time period will cause different grouping decisions is the nickname phenomenon. Their use as given names in their own right changes from time to time. The selection of particular given names changes from time to time as well, one name or spelling rising into fashion while another falls out of grace with the public.
