5.8 Using a string comparator. It is very time consuming for an expert to compose name groups one-by-one. When the Phondex rules have been developed reasonably well, the phonetic code may be used to actually build the name groups provisionally. The expert's job is then merely to approve the groupings made and possibly add to them. Even then, when about half of the spellings are hapax legomena, i.e., single occurrences, and these are carried by only about 2% 5% of the population, the point of deminishing returns may well have been passed. However, it is often the case that the spellings in question are in fact misspellings. It is then possible to enlist the aid of a string comparator. The algorithm may be applied to compare each single occurrence with the standards already established. A sufficiently high degree of similarity returned may justify its inclusion in the group without manual approval.
