authority system

a system of computer programs implementing similarity functions on particular portions of a record structure; the idea is that reference to an authoritative standard is more reliable than to a non-standard or unrecognized value; so long as the form does not reflect the specific reference of the term, the substitution of a (standard) value which reflects its likely reference will improve the quality of the data and of any record linkage utilizing that data
