clan name

the name of a clan as opposed to a family or person; when in some cultures a child would inherit its surname from the clan, it was in practice often equivalent to what we now call the family name; among the Romans the c. n. was their nomen; among the Native Americans and many Africans the name of the tribe would be about the equivalent of a c. n.; cf.
