a grammatical feature in many languages used to distinguish names by the sex of the person being referred to or the lack thereof for places or things; in English this feature occurs on most given names, sometimes by means of a suffix, e.g., “Thomas” vs. “Thomasine;” cf. Chapter 1, §3, ¶3 and Chapter 3, §3, ¶1; in Scandinavian it occurs as well historically on patronymics with the choice of a particular suffix, e.g., “–sen” vs. “–datter”; cf. agreement; cf.
