the form of a name used in some Western cutures that derives from the given name of a saint; historically the given name might have been given because the child was born on the saint’s feast day; the h., however, is a surname, probably ultimately from the father’s given name in turn assigned for that reason; the h. is indicated by a pre-positive hagionymic particle, e.g., Saint.
