Latin surname

a compound surname used widely in Iberia, South and Central America consisting of two surname elements, one inherited from the surname of each of the parents; the Spanish custom is to take for the first element the father’s surname, and for the second element, the first element of the mother’s surname; the Portuguese custom takes first the second element of the mother’s and second, the second element of the father’s; cf.
