posthumous alias (Chinese)

a form of an alias used by the Chinese and some other Oriental cultures; the p. a. might be compared to the title The Father of His Country as it is traditionally applied to refer to George Washington; the p. a. is defined in the Chinese PS-RULE [PS7]; a p. a. or shì (諡 now 謚) is acquired at death, often chosen by the next of kin; the p. a. may be chosen before death by the person himself (huì 諱 now 讳); the p. a. may be chosen for the emperor a) (miàohào 廟號 now 廟号) for subsequent worship at his shrine, or b) by himself (miàohuì 廟諱 now 廟讳) [PS8]
