The Tomlinson lineage traces back from the wife of the deerkeeper on the estate of Baron Edward Sutton, 5th Lord Dudley, of Dudley in Worcestershire, England, an enclave enclosed on all sides by Staffordshire. Evidence supports the fact that she was the eldest child of the Baron by his concubine, Elizabeth Tomlinson, and raised to adulthood in the home of Elizabeth and her parents. The baron could not publicly admit to responsibility as her father, because his own estate inherited from his father could not legally pass to him with such a relationship known. Further children by Elizabeth were openly supported. At here death, Elizabeth, through a confidential note to her administrator, devulged the facts of Ann's birth and marriage to John Bagley, so that her grandchildren by her might have a part of her legacy. Thus Ann's male lineage follows that of the baron on back.
