3.9 Domain names. The domain name refers to a place, but not its topography. Hence, Mt. Holly is not a mount. It denotes the legal rights of the corporation or governing body over the real estate and attached property, which define the jurisdiction of the organization, which includes the population. Thus it is a domain name that makes a connection between three kinds of entities: 1) person, 2) organization or social institution, 3) locality. Individuals may use this word as part of a surname piece, in which case it may be preceded by a nobiliary. It may also appear as a part of a person’s postposed title phrase. The process of derivation associates the domain names with surnames. Especially in Norway, but also in other parts of Scandinavia (and Germany) farmers may use the name of the farm or estate they were born upon as a surname. Such a domain name is normally the name of the lowest level of the locality types.
