2.5 Category. An acceptable spelling may be used in various roles, i.e., in different categories (cf. category symbol), as part of a personal name phrase. A name that appears as both a given name and a surname, for example, has identical spellings in two records, i.e., belongs to two categories. Other attributes of usage may differ depending on the role the name appears in. For example, “Beverly” as a surname is carried no matter what the sex of the person is, whereas when it is a given name, nowadays it is carried mostly by females. Most obviously the relative frequency of usage in a particular locality and time period (culture) would be different for the two uses. Categories are the terminal constituents of the PS-RULES.
