combining form

a part of a name which behaves like an affix in changing the base form to which it is attached; the process of c. contrasts with an inflection, which conveys syntactic information, with an elaboration, which is even more dependent on the base, and with blending, whose components are independent; cf. Chapter 3, §2, ¶6.
