a notable name derived from the name or names of a saint; the s. n. is a given name together with a surname or given name introduced in PS-RULE 4; examples abound: Johannes Baptist, Johannes Nepomuk, Johannes Chrysostom, Simon Peter, Francis Xavier, Maria Magdalena, Maria de Guadalupe, Maria de la Cruz; the shortened version (in italics) is usually predictive of the existence of the rest of the s. n.; the dependence of the two parts of the s. n. suggests that it is not a distinct class, but that there are co-occurrence restrictions between the parts; when a s. n. becomes a surname, it is called a hagionym
